The 英语作为第二语言 (ESL) Department serves resident and international non-native speakers of English seeking to improve their academic and professional language skills. The ESL curriculum is designed to help students advance in reading, writing, listening, and speaking so that they gain the full-range of language skills needed to communicate effectively in their certificate and degree programs as well as in their careers and communities.

ESL 078-英语听力入门（6单元）
ESL 078r -英语阅读入门（6单元）
These are courses for true beginnners in the English language. Students may elect to take these courses for credit or non-credit. Most 078-078R sections are linked to create learning communities.
ESL 088-读写与交流（6单元）
ESL 088r -大学与日常生活阅读与词汇（3单元）
ESL 088L-Understanding and Speaking American English for College and Everyday Life (3 units)
Students must take all courses at 2级 before advancing to 3级. Some sections are linked to create learning communities and maximize opportunities for success.
ESL 098-学术英语入门（6单元）
ESL 098g -书面和口语交流必备语法（3单元）
ESL 098r -大学和日常生活阅读和词汇II（3单元）
Students must take all courses at 3级 before advancing to 4级. Some sections are linked to create learning communities and maximize opportunities for success.
ESL 105-修辞学促进学业成功（6单元）
This integrated skills English language course includes reading, writing, speaking, listening, and other language learning skills for college.
This course is degree applicable. Students at this level have acquired adequate language skills to take GE courses in addition to ESL.
ESL 115-美国文化中的学术话语（6单元）
This humanities course uses content from US cultures as a vehicle to teach English language skills including reading, writing, speaking and listening.

ESL 122-大学修辞学（6单元）
This course is transfer-level English composition equivalent, and satisfies the same GE requirements as ENG 120.
