The 海德美术馆 is thrilled to be presenting concurrent exhibitions of two innovative
San Diegoartists, following our annual Art 教职员工 Exhibition, which closes
this Tuesday, September 18 at 6PM. Painter 格洛丽亚穆里尔 and ceramicist 谢丽尔高
are each prolific in their own practice, producing large bodies of work that have
been exhibited and collected nationally and internationally. Both are easily recognizable
amongst the array of venerated San Diegan artists as a result of establishing unique
visual languages.
格洛丽亚穆里尔, a native of Mexico and San Diego muralist, is known for her transcendental
and supremely meditative painting practice. The artist, sometimes using the pseudonym
“Glow”, derives her imagery from various mythologies to create stark portraits of
wide-eyed figures floating in vibrant, organically-rendered environments. Drawing
on her experience as a graphic designer, Gloria compels her viewers to step briefly
out of their daily routines through mindful reflection by painting walls of contemplation
that cause you to stop, look, and breathe.
Born in Mexico City and raised in Mexicali, Gloria studied graphic design at the Universidad
Iberoamericana in Playas de Tijuana, before moving to San Diego in 2002. Gloria has
been a supporter of Autism Tree Project Foundation since 2006, and has produced work
for several causes including Sea Walls: Artists for Oceans and the Canyonlands Auburn
Creek cleanup project. Her murals and collaborative street art installations can be
found throughout the US and Mexico.
谢丽尔高’s large, intricate ceramic pieces unite architectural and figurative imagery.
Animals and edifices crown her symbolically adorned, life-sized forms - using windows
as eyes and shingles as hair. Inspired by craft and folk art, Cheryl explores themes
of domesticity, romance, and nostalgia, juxtaposing her affinity for objects of antiquity
with references to modern popular culture. Using various glazing techniques, including
terra sigillata, the artist produces unique dry, powdery surfaces that are richly
complicated and show off the artist’s unique gestural style.
Born in New Jersey, Cheryl received a BA from the University of Central Florida and
an MFA in ceramics and fine arts from the University of Miami. Since then she has
been exhibited internationally at galleries, is in several museum collections, and
has had her work featured in over 24 publications. 谢丽尔高 currently works and
resides in Encinitas, California.
Respira will be on display from October 1 until October 26 in conjunction with Grossmont
College’s LatinX Heritage Month programming. On Saturday, October 6 from 10AM-4:30PM,
Gloria will collaborate with Grossmont大学 Art Department’s Public Art class to
create a large mural in the 200 Fine Arts Quad. Gloria will also give an artist talk
on 10月16日星期二 from 2:30-3:30 in Room 24-274. 月亮马戏团 will be on display
in the gallery’s annex space from October 11 until November 6. A joint artist reception
will be held in the 海德美术馆 on October 16 from 4-7PM. There will be refreshments
and a live musical performance by guitarist Jordan DeHass.
